Even though AT&T has plans to release MMS on September 25th, people seem to be chomping at the bit for it, so much so that the good settings wizards over at BenM.at have brewed up a way to enable MMS now, provided that AT&T has upgraded the cell towers in your area. As an FYI for my home town readers, Fresno is one of those cities, so this hack should work for you. It does require just a bit of command line (or Terminal on a Mac) fiddling, so if you’re not comfortable with that, just wait a week for AT&T, but if you are, hit the jump below for the instructions!

Requirements:

HowTo:

  • Close iTunes
  • Save the AT&T Carrier Settings File on your Desktop
  • Now the methods will change depending on your Operating System

For Mac – Open up Terminal, and at the prompt type defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE and hit Enter.

For Windows (32-bit) – Go to Start > Run and type in command, then hit Enter.  Then, at the prompt, type “C:Program FilesiTunesiTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1 and hit Enter.

For Windows (64-bit) – Go to Start > Run and type in command, then hit Enter.  Then, at the prompt, type “C:Program Files(x86)iTunesiTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1 and hit Enter.

  • Plug your iPhone into your Mac
  • Select your iPhone inside iTunes in the sidebar
  • Press and keep the Option-Key hold while clicking on “Check for Update”
  • Now select the AT&T Carrier Settings File on your Desktop and hit “Choose”
  • Let iTunes install the AT&T Carrier Settings File
  • After installing unplug your iPhone and restart your iPhone
  • After the restart open the “Settings.app” on your iPhone and go to “General > Network > Cellular Data Network”
  • Now enter the following settings
  1. APN: wap.cingular
  2. Username: wap@cingulargprs.com
  3. Password: CINGULAR1 (case sensitive)
  4. MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
  5. MMS Proxy: 66.209.11.32
  • Press the Homebutton
  • Reopen your Settings.app and go to “Messages” and enable MMS Messaging
  • Press the Homebutton again and you should be able to send MMS messages now.

This guide only works if AT&T has already updated the cellular towers in your area.
