As Apple updates the iPhone to new software, so does the iPhone Dev Team crack the new software. This is the way of the world. Thank goodness too, because now an Unlock is available for iPhone 2G, 3G and 3GS models running OS 3.1.2. Read on for the guide. If you have more questions about Unlocking or Jailbreaking, check out this post and the directory of guides here.
The first step is to jailbreak your iPhone using PwnageTool. For my Pwnage Tool 3.1.4 Jailbreak Guides, click here. Note that you cannot unlock using BlackRa1n because it will update your baseband. Only PwnageTool will allow you to preserve your baseband, making sure you can unlock.
Once you have jailbroken your iPhone, you will have to install UltraSn0w from Cydia. To do so, follow these simple steps:
- Launch Cydia.
- Add the following source to Cydia repo666.ultrasn0w.com (note there is a “0″ in sn0w, not an “o”).
- After installing this source in Cydia, search for “ultraSn0w”.
- Install UltraSn0w and reboot your iPhone.

Apple took a strong official stand in the matter of iPhone unlocking, although it took them a considerably long time to do so.
Does this also work in Australia with vodafone?
Yes, it should work fine as Vodaphone has begun selling iPhones in Australia
Help! My mum gave me her old Iphonein the uk, I unlocked it with black rain and used it fine. now I’m back in Malta I have synced it to my Itunes. But I had to restore it so I backed it up and restored to factory settings. Then It re locked so I tried black rain again but it just kept making it restore to factory settings. So I looked on your site and found the redsnow jailbreak. I was in a rush so I did it and the picture of the pineapple came on and I thought it was working. Only prob. now it’s stuck on the apple skreen as I think I should have read more thourouly that it was supposed to be 3.0… and i’ve just spoke with mum and she said the phone was on 3.1.2.I’m so scared I’ve recked it!!! HELP!!! What do I do? IItunes isn’t even reckonising it now and I’ve tried manual reboot but nothing seems to get it off the apple symbol. please tell me I can do something! Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks. Alison.
You should be able to restore it. The iPhone needs to be in DFU mode before you attempt a restore with iTunes. Check under the Guru Guides section for a guide on how to do that.
