The newest version of the Blackra1n Jailbreak, version RC3 has been released and it now allows you to Jailbreak your iPhone and then also Unlock it using the Blacksn0w Unlock. This tutorial is for WINDOWS or MAC, the steps are identical.
NOTE: This tutorial will Jailbreak your iPhone, NOT Unlock it. To Unlock your iPhone once you have followed this guide, check out our Unlocking Using Blacksn0w Guide here.
First of all, here’s what you need to get started on this guide:
- iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS Updated to OS 3.1.2 using iTunes
- A Windows PC or a Mac
- Blackra1n Jailbreak tool Get it here
1. Unzip the Blackra1n Jailbreak tool to your desktop.
2. Launch the Blackra1n Jalbreak tool with your iPhone plugged in to your computer.
3. Click “make it ra1n”.
4. Wait for your iPhone to Reboot.
5. Once your iPhone Reboots, you should see the BlackRa1n icon on your springboard.
6. Tap the icon and choose your preferred app installer. I prefer Cydia myself. If you have previously Jailbroken and you would like to Unlock your iPhone, be sure to upgrade Blacksn0w. Continue on to our Unlock guide here.
7. Once your springboard relaunches, you should now see the Cydia app which you can use to install the apps of your choice.
8. You can now uninstall the BlackRa1n app by launching it and tapping uninstall. Reboot your iPhone.

Blackra1n icon not showing up on springboard. What am I doing wrong?
If you’re running it on a windows machine, make sure you run Blackra1n from the C drive, not the desktop. Did you update your iPhone to version 3.1.2 first before attempting the Jailbreak?
Did somebody try this with an iphone 2g? If i upgrade to 3.1.2 with itunes it will lock my iphone for sure since I dont have an at&t sim card and it will only leave me with emergency calls enabled. If this happens is it possible to use blackra1n and then blacksnow to jailbreak and unlock after? Or is there any previous requierement? Thanks, waiting anxious for an answer since i want to upgrade it NOW!! hahah
Yes, you can do this with an iPhone 2G, the Blackra1n RC3 tool performs a hacktivation for you. You can then run the Blacksn0w tool to use your current provider for service!

have i done some thing worng with blackrain every time i turn phone off i have to run blackrain again gets a bit messy when at work on a building site end up with no phone till i get home please advise
Which iPhone model are you using? It sounds like it was not updated properly before it was Jailbroken. I would advise that you run a full restore on your phone back to factory stock 3.1.2. Then try the Blackra1n Jailbreak method again.
Everytime i reboot the phone it goes into recovery mode…i can get out of it by re running blackrain. Is this a known issue?? Had issues with wireless dieing as well…kinda working now after running blackrain twice.
I did jailbreak and unlocking.
I know its a small thing but be nice to not have to worry about jailbreaking everytime i want to reboot

Hmm, it seems that if you have an iPhone 3GS model that was made after week 42 of production, you may encounter this issue with Blackra1n RC3, are you running a 3GS model?
If so, it WILL get stuck in DFU recovery mode EACH AND EVERY TIME the device is rebooted. you WILL have to re-run blackrain to BOOT your device whenever you shut it down entirely, install software that requires a reboot, etc. this is because apple changed the bootloader and if your device is after week 41 this will happen. I’m sure they’re working on a fix.
To check your phone’s “week” read your serial number, digit 4 and 5 are your week.
So if you are week 41+ Iphone 3gs and/or Ipod Touch 3G wait for a fix for the bootloader or deal with having to connect and run blackra1n every time the phone reboots.
when i try to download blackra1n from http://blackra1n.com/ this website it says that it requires a username and password??
Or do i need to use a different software to jailbreak my ipod touch?
I just tried it, no password required. You should be able to use Blackra1n to Jailbreak your iPod touch.

You should try the PwnageTool method of unlocking for an iPhone 2G. Give it a try in our Unlocking section up top!
Week 41 is borderline but should be able to be Jailbroken. There is a chance that it will be a tethered jailbreak however. Which would mean that you have to connect it to your computer every time you reboot.
No fix yet, I’ll be sure to post one when it becomes available!

i was wondering if this can be done to a normal I pod touch 3.1.2 firmware version. also, i have read about tethered and untethered jailbreaks. I dont want to have to plug the device into a computer to turn it on or off either… will that happen if i do this?

Cody, what version of iPod touch are you trying to jailbreak? You can jailbreak 1g and 2g touches but the iPod touch 3g is still a “tethered” jailbreak, this means that you will have to attach it to your computer every time you reboot it. Cheers!
Yes, you’ll be fine Bob, that is the preferred method.
3g is an untethered Jailbreak. You don’t have to activate it first you can just jailbreak and unlock out of the box. A “hacktivation” is performed for you by Blackra1n.
I have iPhone 3G and when I unzip blackra1n and try to install to jailbreak my phone, it begins to recover with blackra1n page (face and flying phones) but then goes back to normal as it was before I hit “make it rain”. Any ideas? Using RC3 and following instructions exactly.

1. how do i backup all my contacs ? pics? movies and music ?
2. will it be safe and the JB will work fine? without wifi and youtube problems?
3. i read that this jb makes alot of problems … is the 3.1.2. so good for me to take the chance of messing up my iphone ?
4. if i have problems will i be able to restore to 3.1.2 without the JB ?

iPhone 3GS 3.1.2, jailbroken. I know there is no fix yet for having to run blackrain everytime you reboot it, but mine rebooted, I connected it to my PC to run blackrain, it looks like it’s working and I noticed it was taking longer than usual, then it flashes and reboot again asking for the usb. Is there a fix for this?
Not that I know of. I honestly don’t think that a tethered Jailbreak is a real Jailbreak. I would wait until there is an untethered option.
You definitely don’t need to install or run Blackra1n if you already have a jailbroken iPhone. If you’re looking for Blacksn0w, the unlocking app, it is available on Cydia. Blackra1n is an app run from your Mac if you don’t already have a Jailbroken phone.
1. You back up your contacts in the same way that you normally synchronize with your computer. Itunes has provisions for syncing your contacts and pictures with your computer on Mac or PC. Your movies and Music should already be on your computer as the iPhone synchronizes these with your PC or Mac every time you plug it in normally.
2. It should work. This is not a guarantee, but the 3G iPhones tend to work just fine without any major issues.
3. 3.1.2 didn’t really add a whole lot, so is it absolutely necessary? No.
4. You absolutely will be able to restore your iPhone back to 3.1.2 after the Jailbreak if you have issues.

I am running Version 3.1.3 on my 3GS iphone. Will I be able to jailbreak it using the instructions for version 3.1.2?
No unfortunately there is no Jailbreak currently for iPhone 3GS on 3.1.3. If you have your SHSH files on file with Cydia then you can downgrade to 3.1.2 then jailbreak it. If your iPhone hasn’t been jailbroken before then you definitely don’t.
I just purchased a new iphone 3gs I followed the instruction like for my other iphone
but when it gets to reboot part it doesn’t reboot. I have the blackra1n saved it in the c drive.

hi.. just got my new 3gs i phone.. i had it jailbbroken by my friend however i was not able to charge t and it went automatically off..now when i restarted it, the icon itunes and the connector appears on the screen.
my friend told me it has to be fixed with blackrain so he sent me the file but when i tried to run it, basically it did not work.. i mean a prompt message says “searching for device”

when i download the blackra1n.exe (RC3) file on my computer and launch it (while my iphone is connected,of course) a message comes up “blackra1n.exe has stopped working.windows will now close the program and notify you if there is a solution” it does that everytime no matter where i download the file to. could you help me? i’m trying to jailbreak and then unlock my iphone 3G S 3.1.2. should i try with another version of blackrain or should it be RC3? and why would it stop working everytime i launch it? thank you
Plug your iPhone into a computer with iTunes and restore it back to the standard firmware. Newer 3GS iPhones cannot be jailbroken yet.
I would try to run it on another computer. It sounds like you’re having issues running Blackra1n on that particular machine.

No, it doesn’t sound like it. I don’t believe that Blackra1n cares whether there is a SIM in the phone or not…. If you have issues with Blackra1n, you can always try the PwnageTool method
