I have grown more and more dependent upon my Twitter stream as a place to both give and recieve the latest information, so Twidget caught my interest immediately. It’s an application available on the Jailbreak app store Cydia that allows you to have your Twitter feed directly displayed on your lock screen, and it looks and works great, with one small flaw….
After you grab and install the app from Cydia, launch the Twidget helper app and type in your Twitter login info. Then launch Winterboard (grab that from Cydia if you don’t have it already) and enable the Twidget module. That’s it, after that your Springboard will automatically restart and you should see your Twitter feed displayed right on the Home screen.
The look of the widget is fantastic, clean and well designed with only a few graphical errors. It gives you full access to your stream, replies DM’s etc. You can scroll through your tweets quickly to see if there’s anything worth seeing.
I would like to be able to click on a tweet and have it take me to my Twitter app of choice, perhaps a small configuration panel for this under Settings would be nice. Other than that though, it’s pretty slick.
The one fatal flaw of the app currently however is that you have a maximum of 7 seconds to look at your Tweets before the lock screen times out. This is a default set by the iPhone OS, but it can be changed, as it has been by applications like Lockinfo and Intelliscreen. I’m sure that this will be implemented in future versions. Until then, Twidget is very cool, but it’s usefulness is limited by the very short viewing window.
