This guide will take you through the Jailbreak process on your iPhone 2G, 3G or 3GS running OS 3.1.2 using RedSn0w 0.9.2. If you’re unfamiliar with the Jailbreak process, please check out our Jailbreak section here.
Here’s what you need to know about Redsn0w 0.9.3:
- If you have a late-model iPhone 3GS, or if you have an iPod touch 2G whose serial number begins with “MC”, you can use redsn0w but you are currently restricted to a tethered Jailbreak. That means you need to connect your device to a computer to complete the boot after a reset.
- Redsn0w will ask you whether or not you have a late model device when used with the iPhone 3GS or iPod touch 2G. Please make sure you answer this correctly or you’ll have to do a full restore.
- To do a tethered reboot either run Redsn0w again with your iPhone plugged in via USB and select “Just boot tethered right now”, or run Blackra1n.
- Ensure that you have the latest version of iTunes.
- Download RedSn0w 0.9.3 for Mac or PC as well as the correct 3.1.2 firmware for your iPhone from here.
- Use iTunes to update your iPhone to the latest firmware 3.1.2.
- Launch RedSn0w and browse for the 3.1.2 firmware file.
- RedSn0w will automatically check if you chose the right firmware and then patch that file for you.
- For iPhone 2G only (all others move on to next step): You will then be offered several options. If you have an iPhone 2G that you wish to unlock, select “Install Cydia” and “Unlock”. You will have to download the 3.9 and 4.6 bootloaders from here. If you just want to jailbreak, disregard this and go to the next step.
- You will now have the option to “Install Cydia” as well as “Custom boot logo” and “Custom recovery logo”. Check “Install Cydia”.
- Plug your iPhone into your computer via USB. RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps necessary to place your iPhone into DFU mode. Follow them exactly or the Jailbreak process will fail and you’ll have to start over.
- Wait for Reboot
That’s it. Your iPhone is now Jailbroken, start installing Apps from Cydia and enjoy. If you want to unlock your iPhone 3G or 3GS, simply install UltraSn0w from Cydia.
