Because I am one of the numerous individuals that has signal degradation when I hold my new iPhone 4 in, you know, my hand, I decided I needed a case right a way. But because I’m getting a really cool bamboo case custom made by grove I didn’t want to spend $29 on a bumper case. But the crummy cases on ebay that you can have shipped in from China will take a week or two to get here. What’s a man to do??? My friend discovered that those rubber wristbands (you know, the ones that the wonder biker made popular) fit just perfectly on the new iPhone 4!
So we went about cutting one up, and here we have it; the one dollar (or less) case:

I even made cutouts in the bottom so that I can leave my “case” on while charging:

Since I took the pictures I have done a couple more where the cuts are much cleaner, but I’m way too lazy to take more pictures. My reception is substantially better after having wrapped my new iPhone in this ugly but functional abomination. I can only imagine that someone will tweak these braclets (its a bit tight and the texture is off) and sell them for somewhere south of what Apple charges, but north of my super cheap solution (my bracelets were free with the purchase of an iPad charger from crazyondigital.com). In case you’re curious, the cut on an unstretched bracelet needs to be about 1.125″ long and about .125″ wide. I also made small cutouts for the silent mode toggle on the side, and a small hole for the headphone jack on top.

nice Lance Armstrong comment
I thought it was pretty funny.
very ingenious!
Hey you gotta work with what you’ve got!
I don’t think it’s ghetto anyway, it’s quite nice, thinking about the bumpers really cost $29? ($33 after CA tax).
I think they look pretty decent as well.
I’m not having the antenna issue but the white bumper looks so good on the iPhone I just ordered a white bracelet to see if I can replicate what you have done. Nice job!
thanks for the idea

I’d think cutting it up so you have access to buttons would be a bit tricky, but for only $1, you could afford to mess up a few times before you got it right. Excellent idea, Oliver!

Fortunately, Apple has realized the seriousness of the situation and offers these bands for free. I’ll be able to enjoy an original piece of rubber from Apple, moreover, probably also produced in China.
Probably! The Bumpers most likely don’t cost much more either :]
This is still quite relevant, because Apple’s lame, free black bumper program has a 2 month delay in shipping time.
